The valley is named after Spokan Chief Spokane and his people who lived there before European settlement. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1877 and began exploration of what would become Spokane Valley. They discovered rich minerals and land for farming when they founded Gold Hill on the site of present-day Spokane Falls. By 1907, Gold Hill had been abandoned and development in neighboring Kittitas County began. In 1912, gold was discovered at Hastings Mill on the south side of the river, which led to increased mining activity in Spokane Valley. By 1915, gold production had ceased due to overmining but new development continued nonetheless as mills were built at North Bend and South Bend along with a general store at Meadow Park near today’s Easton Dam reservoir. The area now known as Spokane Valley was first populated by Hidatsa Indians who hunted game hereabouts. Early knowledge of this region comes from ancient drawings that show evidence for human habitation dating back 10,000 years or more. These drawings depict Native Americans hunting large animals such as deer, buffalo, bear, moose, elk and otter on long hunts across vast open stretches of territory that includes present day Spokane Valley. This area appears to have been well suited for such an undertaking because it included areas with high elevations (elevations above 4500 feet), good drainage systems (positively drained), ample grasslands for feeding stock (prairies), deep water channels for transportation (lakes) and plenty of shelter from weather extremes during freeze/thaw cycles. In 1916, Spokane Falls were established as a tourist attraction and served as a promotional tool for the city of Spokane. The city expanded into the valley in the early 1920s and began to build infrastructure such as highways and schools. The population of Spokane increased rapidly during this time and development continued until World War II when the city was bombed by Japanese forces. After the war, Spokane again grew rapidly and constructed new infrastructure including hospitals, shopping malls, and other commercial buildings.
