Spokane Valley is a small town located in the Spokane County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The valley is named after General George Custer and his army's retreat from Little Bighorn into what is now eastern Spokane County in 1876. The valley straddles both banks of the Susitna River, bordered to the north by Cheney National Forest and to the south by Pullman Township and Wilson Creek Township. Covering an area of , it includes most of western Shawano County within its borders as well as much of eastern Snohomish County. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Spokane Valley has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps. The valley was first inhabited in prehistoric times by various tribes who hunted and gathered resources such as game animals and plants. In 1796, when Spokannock Indian Nation negotiated land purchases from British Columbia for their new village at what is now Eastern Market Street and First Avenue in downtown Spokane Valley, they named their settlement after General George Custer's Army retreat from Little Bighorn into what is now eastern Spokane County in 1876. At first only men could attend church services there but eventually women also became believers following missionary work led by Revs John Wesley Weeks and Anna Maria Wright in the early 1800s. In 1898 Kingfish Lake (then called Beaver Lake) was formed when a burst dam near present-day Cheney opened up during heavy rains upstream from where Beaver Creek flows into Snake River below today's Cheney Damsite Park Preserve." Kingfish Lake remained an important water source for residents until it was drained due to overgrazing in 1906 by adjacent farmers; however, it still contains large amounts of fish which are enjoyed recreationally by many people today including fishing charters operated out of nearby Salmon Arm Marina & Resort.. "From its creation until 1907 Kingfish Lake supported about 350 spawning steelhead trout or about 10% of all chinook salmonid spawnings reported annually along Snake River between Cache Creek eastward through Tillamook Falls Gorge to Warm Springs Reservoir beyond". Today there are no significant populations of either fish or amphibians remains detectable at any site remaining within KingfishLake vicinity due primarily to over stocking with common carp that have expanded rapidly throughout much of our watershed since then...the primary cause underlying this situation appears to be lack or indifferent management practices implemented subsequent thereto."

During World War II, Spokane County played a significant role in the war effort as it housed many military members and facilities including Camp Lewis which served as headquarters for General George Custer’s cavalry unit during his fight against Native American warriors at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. After the war, much of this land was sold off to developers who used it for farming and housing developments. In recent years, progress has been made in developing downtown Spokane Valley into a vibrant cultural destination that offers dining options from small local restaurants to chain restaurants as well as entertainment venues such as theaters and nightlife districts like Pioneer Square and Eastern Market Place.
