Spokane Valley is a small town in Spokane County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The name "Spokane" comes from the Potawatomi word "spokan". The first European to visit what is now Spokane Valley was Captain George Vancouver on July 24, 1792. He named it after Spokes Island in Lake Superior and called the river he crossed "the Columbia." In 1881, when Spokane City was founded as a city by early citizens of the area who were displaced by railroad construction and development near their homes, they renamed it Spokane Valley to reflect its rural character. The original settlement around present-day Spokane Falls was founded in 1847 by pioneer Jacob Shaver along with his wife Nancy and six children. They abandoned their farmstead there because of bad soil and cold winters but found new land east of present day Snohomish River where they built a log cabin and started a cattle ranch that became one of the most successful in Northwest history. Over time other families followed suit until most of what is today downtown Spokane was developed as residential areas within minutes walking distance of each other during the late 1800s and early 1900s. During World War II, many military personnel stationed at FortGeorge Wright near present-day Cheney made their home here while awaiting transportation back home on trains that used then-unknown routes across America's west border cities such as Tacoma or Olympia (now SeaTac Airport). When those buses ran out of fuel or ran into mechanical problems en route towing wounded soldiers offsite for hospital treatment, some residents assembled supplies and made their way to FortGeorge Wright for dinner nightly before returning home for supper; this informal meal service continued until 1945 when all troops finally evacuated from Wright Field including General Eisenhower's headquarters commander staff who traveled days earlier in specially chartered buses! On May 10th 1918 $10 worth of gold coins were discovered at Meadowcroft Mine about sixteen miles northeast of modern day Snohomish River just south of what is today known as Civic Center Square between Ladd Road and Sunrise Boulevard - this site later became known as 'Meadowcroft Mines'. This discovery led to an immediate rush by prospectors seekingClaims on rich gold deposits at nearby Swan Creek which had been overlooked because no roads penetrated deep enough into undeveloped country to reach them. Many people soon moved into unoccupied houses surrounding Meadowcroft Mine since few if any permanent dwellings existed within three miles radius due to relatively high rates of violence throughout much OF Northwest during that era caused largely by rustling cowboys!!!!!!
The Spokane Valley area was first settled by the Spokane tribe of Native Americans in the late 1800s. The area was part of Washington Territory until 1853, when it became part of the new United States of America. In 1861, during the American Civil War, the Spokane Valley Battlefields were fought between Union and Confederate forces. The battle resulted in a loss for the Confederacy, but a victory for the Union forces. After the war, many farms and businesses were founded in this region, including Spokes Manufacturing Company and Eastern Railway. The area saw more growth in the following decades, withaffordable housing becoming available and major infrastructure projects such as Highway 97 being built. Today, much of what was once rural farmland is now residential neighborhoods or commercial areas within walking distance of downtown Spokane.
