Spokane County was originally rural and agricultural until the late 19th century when logging began replacing agriculture as the mainstay of local economy. In 1905, Spokane County became part of Washington State when it was organized as a state within the United States. At that time, much of what today constitutes Spokane Valley became part of Whatcom County which lies to the south and east. Today, most residents are descendants of those who live in or have lived in Spokane Valley for centuries.
The Spokane Valley region is located in the eastern half of Washington and includes parts of the cities of Spokane, Wenatchee, and Auburn. The valley was first inhabited by the Haida people who lived here from before 1000 AD. In 1855, the various Indian reservations were combined into one land grant to John C. Fremont. The area became a center for lumber production after the Spokane Lumber Company was founded in 1881. After World War II, agricultural production increased as local farmers developed irrigation systems and grew wheat, corn, soybeans, and other crops. A major transportation artery in this area is I-5 which skirts through the valley east to west.
