In 1861, Spokane Valley was the site of a battlefield between Confederate and Union forces. The battle resulted in the death of over 120 soldiers from both sides. As part of commemoration for this event, the Confederates built a monument to fallen soldiers in nearby Clearwater. The monument has since been removed, but its legacy lives on in the form of two large bipods that can be seen throughout Spokane Valley.
