Aftercontact with European explorers began about 1500 AD various cultures lived near or across from where modern day Spokane Valley stands including several bands of Chinook Indians (the Kootenai tribe), Yakima Nation (later known as Confederated Tribes of Yakama Nation), Lewis and Clark Expedition party member Joseph Bonney’s group (partly destroyed by fire while exploring Puget Sound region), Potlatch group led by Chief Seattle (moved his village downriver to lower Shelton River before being killed there) among others

Spokane Valley is a small town in Washington State, United States. The population was 5,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spokane-Coulee City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Spokane" comes from Quakers who immigrated to what is now Spokane Valley in 1847. In 1867, the town was renamed after General George Custer when his body was found near present day Spokane Falls. The town has seen many changes over its history including being a coal mining and logging center during the 19th century; becoming an agricultural community during the early 20th century; and experiencing growth during the late 20th century as a result of its proximity to Seattle metropolitan area and military presence. On October 15, 1907, Spokane Valley became one of three communities within Washington State that joined together to form the new state of Washington. This event occurred due to pressure from Native Americans who wanted their land back for hunting and fishing purposes. The other two communities were Onalaska and Wenatchee which had already formed statehoods earlier that year. The city of Spokane grew up around Spokanesville until 1954 when it merged with neighboring Coulee City to become one municipality with a population of over 300,000 people.
