James Cook and his crew of HMS " Discovery" on July 17th, 1792 during their circumnavigation of the world. They charted latitude 46°13'N (122°02'W) and longitude 167°14'E (96°24'W). In 1853 John Athey founded the town of Norden in what is now Shoreline Township on land he had bought from Chief Moses Chilcott for $1 cash and 10 bushels of potatoes. In 1861 The State Railroadfinished built a railroad tunnel under Juan de Fuca Strait connecting Tacoma with Olympia so Norden could be connected with Seattle by rail. In 1909 the shorelines around present day Norden, James Beach, King's Beach and Eastsound were surveyed by Alfred Wegener as part of hisoffer to create a continental shelf in Antarctica which would allow passage through to Asia by wayofthe Drake Passage but no action was taken until 1912 when George Wickersham became superintendentof USGS Pacific Northwest Research Laboratory in Seattle and suggested that they surveyshorelines adjacent to both sidesofthe strait which would enable ships sailing within it attracesshorelines near present day Tacoma Vashon Islandand North Vancouver Island

The town grew quickly due to its location on the Strait of Juan de Fuca and its easy access to maritime resources. By 1920, Shoreline had a population of 3,000 people and became an agricultural center with dairy farms and orchards. In the 1940s and 1950s,shoreline experienced significant growth thanks to World War II military spending which created jobs in shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing. After the war ended, shorelines growth slowed as boatbuilding declined while aircraft production increased but has since resumed with recent investments in tourism and development around Discovery Bay Park
