Visitors can find many shops and restaurants serving local seafood while exploring downtown or taking a walk onshore. Shoreline is located on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, in the Puget Sound region. It is a census-designated place (CDP) and it had a population of 127 as of 2010. The CDP is bounded by Elliott Bay to the north, the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the east, and Puget Sound to the south. The climate in Shoreline varies from mild year-round temperatures to severe cold snaps during winter months. In addition, there are numerous wetlands that make up much of Shoreline's acreage. The first European settlement in what is now Shoreline was made in 1847 when Captain George Vancouver and his crew explored what became present-day Washington Territory. At that time, land was purchased by John McLoughlin who named it "Vancouver Island." The first permanent European residents were fishermen who built their boats at Mud Point on the southern end of Vancouver Island until 1851 when they moved ashore and founded town onshore at what is now North Beach near downtown Seattle. In 1861, King George IV granted land including present-day Harborview Park to James Eames for use as an open space adjacent to his new home at Bellevue Hill on Elliot Bay. The city's first street grid was laid out around this time with Kingman Road leading east from Bellevue Hill intoSeattle proper while First Street led west from Harborview Park down toward Capitol Hill. This layout persisted until 1907 when SR 805 was routed through Seattle so that all streets led north from Bellevue Hill towards Interstate 5 and then turned southeast towards Everett before terminating at Mercer Island today. During World War II, Shoreline played an important role as a naval base with facilities including shipyards and a fuel depot used for both Allied military forces fighting in Europe and U.SAAF bombers flying over Japan during Operation Iwo Jima . After VE Day in 1945, shorelineside businesses reopened but many shops closed because war production hadResulted largelyin shortagesof materials not only locally but also overseas which caused prices for key items like nailsto skyrocket; however local merchants quickly adapted by setting up similar operations within weeks or even days following VE Day
The first Europeans to visit what is now Shoreline, Washington were the Spanish in 1792. The area was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California and soon after American colonists arrived in 1792, they began Exploring and mapping this new land. The first European settlement on what is now Shoreline was at nearby Point Defiance by Captain George Vancouver in 1795. This established British control over the area and it would not be until 1851 when an act of Congress recognized the independent state of Washington as a separate country – making Shoreline its capital.
