Shoreline is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was founded by THOMAS PARKER on October 7, 1892 as a ferry landing on Puget Sound for settlers and traders coming from the San Juan Islands. Shoreline grew quickly due to its location between Seattle and Tacoma; it had a post office from 1896 until 1951. In 1907, shoreline residents organized what would become the first local government in King County. A year later they formed a Township Committee which became an incorporated village in 1912 with Chanute Lake as its central water source. In 1916 Shoreline voted to annex neighboring Edmonds into their village and build a school and fire hall there; Edmonds refused to join because it felt that it would lose its autonomy as a separate municipality. In 1930 when Shoreline annexed Bothell, Bothell voted not to annex because they wanted more control over their own schools and firehall (which they built). In 1949 the town approved annexation of nearby Sumner after votes were taken on two different occasions to annex both towns simultaneously - but this annexation failed due to objections from Sumner's mayor who argued that he had more power than Shoreline's municipal council. However, Shoreline continued annexing smaller villages until 1978 when it annexed Mona Vale followingMona Vale's incorporation into King County as well as voter approval for the merger of both villages' councils into one body. The first Europeans to visit the area now known as Washington were the Spanish in 1793. The following year, representatives from France and Britain traveled to the region and negotiated a purchase of land from the Native Americans. In 1851, Congress created what is now the District of Columbia with its own government. The following year, King George IV granted Washington's honorary citizenship.
