The first sighting devices used to aim firearms were using mirrors. Shoreline is a census-designated place in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The community was founded by settlers from Sweden in 1851, when they arrived onshore from Discovery Bay in what is now Tacoma. The town was named for Montague Shores, one of several small communities along Puget Sound formed during the early days of Seattle's growth as an industrial center. In 1857, a group of investors led by Commodore George Vancouver purchased land at Shoreline for $4,000 cash; they named their new town after him and established a wharf there to service their vessels. In 1870, construction began on a railroad linking Seattle with inland towns like Bellingham and Olympia; Shoreline became one of its outposts. The town's first store opened in 1872; within five years it had become home to over 100 residents. By 1900, Shoreline had become an important shipping point for agricultural products transported across Puget Sound via railroads; it also developed into an attractive residential community with patios and wrought-iron balconies typical of upper-class Swedish style homes built around that time. During World War II, Shoreline played an important role as a military airfield; its runways were used by Boeing aircraft manufacturing plants adjacent to its wharf until 1967. After that year, shoreline residents started making deliveries directly to Boeing facilities through roads connecting their neighborhood directly with those factories: this later became known as "Boeing Boulevard". It wasn't until 1984 that shorelines' dependence on Interstate 5 began Topple Hill Road becoming the only access route into town from outside the city limits; much later still (in 2006), Interstates 590 and 95 were routed through neighboring Lynwood instead creating yet another barrier against downtown shopping opportunities for Shoreline residents). One of the most significant events that took place during Shoreline's early years were its ties to WAISD (Washington Agricultural and Industrial School District). This program provided agricultural education for young people who would later populate the town. In 1935,shoreline became a city when annexation by Everett made it an official municipality within WAISD boundaries. Today, Olympia-Bremerton has long been considered to be one of the two cores of Seattle; both cities are home to over 100% of Seattle’s population growth since 2000 while Shoreline has seen only 2% percent growth rate over that time period
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish in 1609. The next year, they built a trading post on the present-day site of Seattle. In 1792, British traders established a permanent settlement at Fort Point on Puget Sound. They named it Seattle after King George III of England. The first non-native residents of Seattle were Japanese immigrants who arrived during World War II.
