Shoreline is a small town in the state of Washington located on the Kitsap Peninsula. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit the area was Captain George Vancouver in 1792 and he named it "Nimbus" after his own ship, HMS Nimbus. In 1854, shorelines were surveyed for a canal that would connect Tacoma and Seattle; however, no construction ever took place. In 1906, King County Commissioners decided to annex much of what is now Shoreline into their county. This gave rise to claims by some residents that they had lived here all their lives while others claim they only discovered this community when they got county assistance with land purchases. The community's history began with two stores - One-ota Hardware and J & P Storage - which operated from 1907 until 1971. The storekeepers were John Aiken and his son Harry Aiken II who also opened the first post office in Shoreline in 1911. Harry Aiken's father had opened a general store on lower Main Street before moving it to its current location on 1st Avenue North in 1922. After World War II, most of the businesses closed but One-ota Hardware continued operations as a grocery until 1982 when it merged with Safeway Incorporated to become Safeway/Oneota Holdings Corporation . In 2000, Oneota Holdings Corporation sold its holdings back to John Aiken Jr., who ran it for seven years as an individual business before selling it again to Dean Foods Co.,Inc.. Today Oneota Holdings Corp operates as Simply Sams Shoe Store #1 (formerly known as Sam's Club) along First Avenue North from Pike Place Market southward through Pierce County .
