Shoreline is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,855 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Shoreline was George Mercer in 1853. He and his family bought 6 acres (2 ha) of land from John Bennett on Lake Union for $1,000. In 1857, Augustus Kelley purchased 2 acres (0.8 ha) from Mercer for $5 per acre. The first post office was established at Shoreline in 1861; it became a district seat in 1865. In 1886, the city of Seattle annexed Shoreline as part of its eastern borderlands growth following annexation of Snohomish County by Seattle. At that time, only 5 percent of the town's population lived withinSeattle limits and most residents were clustered around Lakeside and Capitol Hill neighborhoods to the east and west respectively. By 1920 just over one-third ofshoreline residents lived within city limits while less than 10 percent did so today; many single family homes remain within city boundaries today but are served by overnight service or by satellite dishes providing local programming to residents who have Internet access outside their homes or properties

The Puget Sound area was first settled by the Cascades people in the late 12th century. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1851 when the United States acquired Oregon and Washington from Mexico. In 1855, Congress passed an act to create a national protectorate over all of British Columbia, which included most of what is now Western Washington. The protectorate lasted until 1789, when it was terminated by Britain after its defeat in the Seven Years' War. The area that includes present-day Western Washington was part of Rupert's land grant to King George III in 1792. By 1846, about 60% of the population of Puget Sound lived on farms or had small businesses supplying goods and services to residents near Seattle and Tacoma.
