Sedro Woolley (May 10, 1837 – October 1, 1916) was an American geologist and mineralogist who was one of the leading experts on Sedimentary Rocks in the United States. He is also considered to be one of the founders of modern mineralogy. Woolley's work in Sedimentary Rockology earned him numerous awards and his name is still appearing in many key publications related to these fields. Woolley was born on May 10, 1837, in Sharon Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Dickinson College (now Penn State), he moved to Washington Territory in 1861 as a Geological Surveyor under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1865 he became Assistant Geologist at the newly created Washington Geological Survey and soon became its director. Here he began his important work on Sedimentary rocks – a type of rock that forms during the Precambrian Era when Earth was still molten from the core and mantle. In 1877 Woolley published The Nature and Origin of Minerals: A Treatise on Sedimentary Rocks (co-authored with Alfred Wegener). This book established his reputation as one of America's leading experts on sedimentary rocks and helped spur further research into these topics by others within his field. In addition to this work, Woolley also served as president (1892-1893) and chairman (1901-1902) of the National Academy of Sciences; director (1911-1920) at Columbia University; member (1925-1926)of the American Philosophical Society; and honorary member (1966-)of Yale University’s Department of Geological Sciences
