Sedro Woolley is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,927 at the 2010 census. Sedro Woolley is located on the eastern edge of the Snohomish National Forest and its ZIP code 98260 has an area of . It is home to the University of Washington and many other businesses and services. The name "Sedro Woolley" was given to the town by General John Sedgwick in 1851 as part of his plan for naming all of King County after military leaders from throughout America who had served during the Mexican-American War. At first, there were only three towns in King County - Walla Walla, Wenatchee and Seattle - but Sedro Woolley became one of them when it was annexed by Seattle in 1901. The first settler in what is now Sedro Woolley was George Stevens, who arrived with his family in 1853. He built a log cabin on what is now Park Avenue North about two miles northeast of present day Sedro Woolley. Stevens did not stay long; within a few years he had sold his land and moved away to start anew. The first permanent resident in what would become SedROwoolLEY was Drury Colburn (1857-1912). Colburn established a small farm hereabouts before moving westward into Snohomish County where he operated a lumber yard until 1905 when he sold everything and moved back east to establish himself permanently near Olympia. In 1906 Captain Charles Wickersham founded Coal Harbor Lumber Company which would continue operations until 1935 when it merged with another logging company to form Western Wood Products Company Limited which still exists today as Pacific Northwest Lumber Co., Ltd.. In 1915 Captain Willard Howe purchased part of Captian Wickersham's company shares including Coal Harbor Lumber Company assets which led to the founding of Howe Sound Logging & Manufacturing Corporation (later renamed Western Wood Products) which continued operation until 1977 when it merged with J&J Paper products Incorporated creating Safeway Paper Products Incorporated .
