The first permanent settler in what would become Sedro Woolley was Jens Christensen who arrived on July 4, 1823 from Denmark with his family. Woolley had a post office from February 26, 1828 until December 11, 1861. In 1893 the community incorporated as part of King County and voted to change its name to Sedro Woolley in honor of woolen fabricator and banker George WASHINGTON (1784-1851). The University of Washington opened its doors on October 1, 1907 as Seattle's first public university with a student body composed mostly of working class students from neighborhoods near campus. Many people attribute UW's initial success to then-President Theodore Roosevelt who spearheaded legislation creating the school's Board of Regents which appointed educational administrators including controversial educator Alfred MUNROE (1863-1935) In 1932 UW merged with Seattle University to form Seattle–University College which absorbed both schools' medical schools as well as the departments of law enforcement and firefighting which were housed within Seattle Police Department headquarters at Fourth Avenue South and Occidental Street. Sedro Woolley was a British-born American entrepreneur and politician who served as the 38th mayor of Seattle from 1959 to 1961. After moving to the United States at age 17, he worked his way up through the ranks of an importexport company before landing a job as an assistant treasurer of King County in 1922. In 1930, Woolley married Margaret Simons; they would have three children. In 1959, Woolley became Mayor of Seattle after serving two terms as deputy mayor under then-Mayor Royce Youngblood. During his tenure, he oversaw major citywide transformations including the opening of KeyArena and construction of new public schools and libraries. He also helped create Sounders FC soccer club and built one of America's first light rail systems. In 1961, after successful reelection against incumbent Norm Rice (D), Woolley retired from politics but continued to serve as honorary chairman of the King County Republican Committee until his death in 1998.
