The brothers were instrumental in developing the first professional quality telescope, the Argus 2X20mm, which became famous for its excellent clarity and detail when used by scientists and astronomers throughout the United States. In 1916, Dr. Argus donated this telescope to the University of Washington as part of their museum collection. The university preserved and operated this telescope until it was lost in 1962 during a fire at their research building on Capitol Hill. Today, the Intrepid Museum Foundation has restored and operates this telescope using original parts from Dr.Argus' gift. The Seattle-based Intrepid Museum Foundation also preserves another important scoped instrument: the 3-inch (76 mm) refractor scope built by George Catlin of Dayton, Ohio in 1913–14 for use at Mount Rainier National Park! This powerful telescope allowed researchers to study many delicateobjects such as plants and rocks up close without having them spoiled by glare or light interference caused by other objects nearby.
