The history of target holders in Seattle dates back to the early 1900s when a group of local businessmen formed the Seattle Shooting Club. The club rented ranges and shooters would use them to practice their shooting skills. In 1907, the Seattle Shooting Club moved to its current location on Pike Place Market and began holding regular competitions. From 1911-1914, they also hosted annual open air rifle shootings that attracted international attention. In 1927, the Washington State Rifle Association (WSRAA) was founded in Olympia and became an affiliate of the Seattle Shooting Club. As WSRAA grew, so too did its demand for target holders. In 1930, WSRAA purchased land adjacent to Pike Place Market and built a complex called Range B which now houses both the WA Museum of History & Industry and Echo Park Target Center. This event marked the first time that target holders were offered free access to public ranges across Washington state. Target holder availability increased as World War II approached and many businesses turned into munitions factories. By 1945, there were over 100Target HOLDERS LICENSEes in operation statewide! During this time period there were also several design changes made to improve accuracy with target holders including: adjustable triggers, sights/gimbal systems, detachable stocks, bipods and even recoil compensators! Today’s targets are made from lightweight materials such as carbon fiber which allows shooters to achieve greater accuracy while still maintaining reasonable weight for transport or storage. Additionally, today’s targets come equipped with digital displays that allow shooters to track their shots from start to finish without ever having to leave their seat!
