The first documented use of gun slings in Seattle was on October 12, 1892 when two businessmen, John Cavanaugh and James Ahern paired up and created the Seattle Gun Sling company. The company sold its products commercially until 1921. During this time period, gun slings were also known as “telephone cords” because they were used to sling grenades or pistols over one's shoulder while walking through an open area. In 1927, the city passed an ordinance regulating firearms and ammunition within limits set by state law. This ordinance madegun possession a misdemeanor and prohibited any act which would allow someone other than an owner of a registered firearm to possess or use it without prior written permission from City Hall. These regulations remained in effect until 1934 when they were repealed due to changes in state law related to Prohibition). Gun ownership began increasing significantly after World War II; however, restrictions on handgun ownership still applied at this time (see History of Gun Regulations for more information). In 1951, Mayor George Seaton ordered all handguns out of storage located across town due to concerns about potential gang violence (later proven False Fearmongering).
