Gun magazines have been a part of Seattle's history for over 100 years. At the turn of the century, Seattle had a small population and few means to purchase firearms. So, local gunsmiths began producing their own magazines to serve the needs of their customers. The first magazine in Seattle was published in 1892 by A.W. Caldwell & Sons, an independently owned business. In 1903, Mayor George Kerr issued an ordinance outlawing handguns in the city limits and required that all pistols be registered with the police department. This ordinance led to the production of .32 caliber pistols by Puget Sound Arms Company and other handgun manufacturers in order to comply with the regulation. In 1907, another ordinance introduced restrictions on ammunition purchases in Seattle based on capacity and type of ammunition used rather than weight or brand name only (later repealed). Despite these regulations, gun owners continued to produce their own magazines throughout most of this period because there were no laws prohibiting it or providing financial incentive for doing so. Gun enthusiasts also produced art prints or posters depicting various aspects of firearms use and ownership during this time period as a way to show off their collection or advertise upcoming shows/meetings. For many reasons including World War II rationing which impacted firearm ownership more than any other era (), Gun Magazines switch from being printed monthly/yearly to quarterly/bi-weekly publications beginning around 1951 when they became self-published through newsstands across downtownSeattle under then-newcooperator Northwest Publishing Syndicate (). This transition allowed them greater distribution outside of downtown while still keeping editorial control within the company’s hands which resulted in increased quality and consistency over time (). Magazine circulation peaked at almost 2 million copies per issue between 1957-1964 before gradually decreasing due largely to technological advancements which made it difficult for printers or publishers alike to keep up with demand ()
