In 1868, J.H.L. Dreyfus developed a telescope that could be worn on the head and was called a “Dreyfusian Binocular” because it was developed by Jules Dreyfus, who was then an officer in the French army. In 1896, Seattle’s first amateur observatory was built and became known as the American Astronomical Society Observatory (AASO). The AASO continued to operate until 1957 when it merged with the British astronomical society, which became known as the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS). In 1937, King George VI of England donated two telescopes known as “The Globe and Sword” to RAS after they had been loaned to him by his wife Queen Elizabeth II of England. These telescopes are now located inside The Royal Observatory in Greenwich London UK. In 1948, Seattle city council passed an ordinance allowing citizens to buy and sell binoculars within city limits without having to obtain a license from AASO or RAS. This ordinance is still in effect today and allows people to purchase and sell binoculars without having any permits from either organization. Today’s skyline is based largely on development following World War II; most old buildings have been replaced or rehabilitated. Today’s city is home to over 650 thousand people1; it has experienced dramatic social changes since its founding including becoming one of the most diverse cities in America2; becoming a center for progressive politics3; hosting numerous world-renowned events4; being host to major sporting events5; and playing a key role in technology culture6
