In 1851, local businessman James Denny built his first home at 406 Main Street east of downtownSeattle. He soon became one of Seattle's most powerful real estate developers and used his wealth to support many educational institutions and civic organizations around town. In 1907 he donated land for what would become University Village which now houses several large apartment buildings as well as several smaller buildings housing shops, restaurants, recreational activities and other services for students and locals alike. destroyed by fire on December 15th 1908". Seatac is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington. It is located on the east side of the Salmon River, about 10 miles north-northwest of Seattle and 20 miles south-southwest of Tacoma. The population was 1,671 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Seatac was John Wesley Powell, who arrived in 1851. His cabin was built on the west bank of the river. In 1902, George Hearn bought land adjacent to Powell's Cabin and began developing it into a coalmining town known as Hearnville. The name change occurred because at that time most people in Seatac were farmers or miners who called themselves "Hearn." In 1907, David Crippen purchased adjoining land from Hearn and developed it into what is now downtown Seatac. He named it after his brother-in-law Samuel Seaton, who had donated land for the townsite. Passenger trains stopped running between Seattle and Tacoma here until 1927 when Amtrak took over operation and ran their routes through SeaTac instead. The first post office in Seatac was established in 1903. It remained operational until 1911 when it moved to nearby Puyallup to be closer to railroad tracks (the present day Union Station). The only other occupant of this building was a store which opened in 1912; its last customer being Wm Henson who left after one month due to lack of business
The first white person to set foot on what is now Seatac was Captain George Vancouver in 1792. In 1849, the area became part of Washington Territory and later the United States of America. The first train service to reach what is now Seatac started in 1892.
