Seatac, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first people to live in Seatac were Swedish immigrants who arrived in 1851. In 1907, the United States Government leased land from the Yakima Tribe and built a military airfield on it as part of World War I effort to keep Yakima warriors away from Europe during the war. In 1925, Seatac became an independent municipality when it split off from King County. In 1947, a new airport was opened by the U.S. government and named Seatac after General James Keesler's command post for air operations over North Korea during that country's Korean War (1949-1950). The first commercial airline service began at this new airport on November 20th, 1948 with Northwest Airlines' flight NP-5A from Seattle to Pyongyang. At its peak in 1951, Northwest Airlines served more than 60 destinations out of this newly opened airport with flights daily into and out of Pyongyang! On July 12th 1959, Boeing 747s were delivered to Seatac Airport as passengers saw their first jet airliner taking off! On October 15th 1969 passenger jets landed at nearby Sea-Tac Airport for their world trip on Pan Am flight PE-1010 operated by American Airlines! This was also the last time commercial JetBlue Airways flew out of Seattle; instead they used Sea-Tac until December 22nd 2014 when they moved to JFK International Airport in New York City! In honor of Passenger JetBlue Airways visit we will continue flying all routes served by them until September 30th 2020!
On July 4, 1847, the first train arrived in Seatac Cemetery. The cemetery was opened in 1853 and was originally called Seatac Park. It was renamed to Seatac Cemetery in 1907.
