Seattie (1797-1863), captain of HMS Discovery during the Northwest Fur Trade era. In 1916, Seattie's son, Rear Admiral John A. Seattie III (1902-1983), moved to Seatac from his home in Everett and helped found what would become Microsoft. The town has been called "the birthplace of Microsoft" because its founder arrived there in 1966 to start Microsoft Research LLC., which developed Windows 2K/XP, Office 2002/2003/2007, Exchange 2003/2007 and a number of other products used by millions of people around the world. In 1998, seatac won an award from the National Civic League as America's Best Small Town for Community Values. The Susitna River provides drinking water for over 500 residents and businesses in Seatac; it also provides power to local industries like Boeing Aircraft Parts and Printing Company No 1720 through a partnership with SEATAC Electric Cooperative Incorporated Seatac is located within walking distance of many Smithsonian museums such as: The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), The National Aquarium (NMH), The Smithsonian Castle (STG), The Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden (HMSO) and D'Angelo's Italian Restaurant & Bakery which offers pastries such as cannoli made with apple butter or raspberry jam
Seatac was founded in 1894 by Edwin L. Sitton and John L. Geddes as the Seatac Railroad Company. The railroad became a subsidiary of the Seattle, Tacoma, and Puget Sound Railway in 1906. In 1916, the company merged with the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway to form the Western Washington Railway. In 1932, the Western Washington Railway was merged into the Union Pacific Railroad.
