Sammamish, Washington is home to one of the most interesting gun cases in history. In 1979, a man named Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin purchased a used Ruger 10/22 rifle from a pawnshop in Sammamish. The gun had been reported as being stolen from a local store and was believed to be lost forever. Aldrin decided to try and track down the owner, even going so far as to take pictures of the rifle himself at a shooting range in order to prove its ownership. Eventually, Aldrin was able to find the rightful owner of the rifle and return it to them. This event is still considered one of the biggest theft stories in Washington state history. Sammamish is a census-designated place in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first Europeans to reach Sammamish were French fur traders in 1792 and they named it "Sammamish". The name change may be due to their fear that the Indians would consider them hostile if they called themselves "Sammamish" instead of "Frenchmen". In 1851, the town was platted and named after Samuel Morse, an early settler. Morse had been born in what is now Portsmouth, New Hampshire but moved with his family to Olympia when he was six years old. He became a contractor for the city of Olympia and opened a store there in 1837. In 1840, he married Rosalie Cutts (1794-1863), daughter of George Cutts (1772-1834). They raised six children: Samuel (1841-1921), Emily (1843-1926), Alfred Morse Jr. (1845-1924), Elihu Morse (born 1850), Alice Morse Howe (born 1853) and John A. Morse Sr.(born 1861). Morse served as Mayor of Olympia from 1893 until 1901 and as Commissioner of Public Lands from 1903 until 1907. He also founded the first telephone company in Puget Sound and was one of its founders. In 1906, Samuel Morse died at age ninety two while living in Seattle; his wife Rosalie continued to live with them until her death three years later at age ninety fourteen. His son Alfred took over management of the store until his father's death two years later at age ninety seven; then Alice took over operations until she too passed away in 1926.. Alfred's brother John A., Jr., who succeeded him as mayor from 1911 until 1916 also held office under multiple terms including alternate periods 1909 through 1917 due to World War I service; 1919 through 1923 during Prohibition days; 1925–29 during Coolidge administration; 1931–33 during Franklin D Roosevelt administration; 1935–39 during World War II era John A.'s son John M."Al"Morse served as mayor from 1991 through 1999 before being elected governor on November 4th 1999.. Al's wife Patrice has since taken over running the business operation which continues today

In 1850, the first school in the town was built, and in 1865, the first post office was opened. By 1870, Sammamish had a population of over 100 people. Over time, the town became a popular place for farmers to sell their crops and goods from their homes. In 1925, Sammamish had its first storehouse. Today, the town has a number of businesses that offer services such as plumbing and home repairs.
