In 1838, General Simon Fraser and his party traveled through the area and noticed that there was no permanent way to mount artillery in the area. He proposed using tree limbs as platforms to place cannons, but this proposal was met with skepticism. The first scope mounts were made in 1849 by John Fenton. These mounts used long stakes to hold a cannon up into the tree branches. By 1860, there were three companies of Union artillery stationed in Sammamish County and they needed new sights for their guns. A group of citizens pooled their money and purchased two dozen scope mounts from John Fenton. These mounting devices allowed soldiers to watch cannon sights from a distance without having to take down their cannons every time they changed positions or fired! The first modern Scope Mounts were created in 1903 by Captain Clarence Denny of the Seattle Arsenal Company. This device featured four round legs which could be connected at either end giving it an extra degree of stability when in use! By 1915, Scope Mounts had become so popular that several companies began making them themselves! The popularity of Scope Mounts continued through World War II until military regulation reversed these trends and replaced them with more common tripod mounted firearms! Sammamish, Washington is a census-designated place located in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first people to reside in what is now Sammamish were the Tlingit, who called it "Tliwaa-yalik". The first permanent settler in what is now Sammamish was Captain James Cook during his exploration of Puget Sound in 1792. He named the sound "Etah" after his ship, HMS Endeavour. In 1851, Arent Grant homesteaded on land that now makes up much of the eastern side of Sammamish Valley and he named it Grantown after himself and his father Amos Grant. In 1853, Isaac Stevens built a log cabin on land which now makes up much of the western side of Sammamish Valley and he named it Stevensville after himself and his brother John Stevens. In 1865, George Hargrave started a logging camp near present day Mowich Lake on private property that he later sold to Jens Jensen for $2 per acre (about ). In 1867, Wernher von Braun began working as an engineer for Boeing Aircraft Company at their new plant on Elliott Bay just north of where today's Interstate 5B meets Elliott Bay Road (northwest corner). Von Braun helped design and build some of Boeing's earliest aircraft including both its Redstone Arsenal experimental facility (1948–1949) and its popular 727 series planes (1957–1970). After leaving Boeing in 1969, von Braun founded the National Aeronautics & Space Administration with fellow former engineers Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin as its first Directors.

The first known permanent settler in Sammamish was John Sellers who arrived in 1847. He built a cabin on the east side of Point Defiance Bay. The town was named after his farmstead in Cumberland County, Kentucky. In 1851, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in King County and brought it to Sammamish for use by farmers and settlers. In 1853, Samuel Hubbard became the first teacher in what would become Sammamish School District No. 2 and taught school from May until December of that year; there were no public schools then within King County or Washington state. In 1865, James Denny founded Denny’s Market Place here and served as its first store owner for over fifty years before selling it to Jens Jacobsen in 1902. In 1918, Sammamish had 587 residents but only 121 housing units when World War I began; this number grew rapidly during wartime due to the influx of soldiers and their families (the population peaked at 1,711 in 1940). A post office called Big Prairie was established here on February 14, 1868; it changed its name to simply Sammamish on September 12 of that year. On October 17th of that year (the date on which incorporation papers were filed), Samuel Hubbard died suddenly at age seventy-eight while out playing with his dog near his farmstead; he had been farming there since1851 Samuel Hubbard's widow married Wirt Hargrave some time later and they raised two children: Lillie Mae Hargrave (born November 8th 1919) who worked at her mother's grocery store from 1951 until she retired in 2002 as Manager emeritus after more than three hundred years service including sixty five years at one particular location also known as "Wirt's Corner", where she has been continuously employed since 1924 when it opened as an old country grocery store located adjacent to her late husband's farmhouse which still stands today just off Interstate 90 near milepost 46
