In 1861, when Tacoma became a city, Sammamish voted to annex itself into that city; this vote failed but saw growth in business around the new downtown district which would eventually be named after it: Seattle Center Boulevard today). A post office opened in Sammamish on November 3, 1865; it remained open until 1959. The first store in town was built on First Avenue SW (now Federal Way Boulevard) about 4 miles east of present-day downtown Sammamish.
