Sammamish is a census-designated place in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Sammamish is located on the eastern shore of Lake Sammamish and extends into Thurston County to the east. In 1875, George Hildebrandt purchased land from Halliday and began farming it also. He renamed his farm "Hildebrandt's Landing". In 1916, Harry Olson joined Hildebrandt's family as an owner/operator of Olsen's Lumber Company which became part of Nordstroms Department Store chain later that year. The Olson family has operated that business ever since. In 1962, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen purchased 50 acres (20 hectares) of land between Halliday's Landing and Hildebrandt's Landing for $1 million dollars (). That same year, Microsoft opened its first office in Sammamish with space for 100 employees (). Today Microsoft employs over 4500 people there (). On July 16th 1948 during World War II Headquarters U S Army Air Forces Northwest Pacific Area Joint Expeditionary Force (Joint Chiefs) operations off Coast of Japan resulted in damage to USS “Alaska” (CVE-21). Alaskan whale meat was among items removed from ship during salvage operation USS “Alaska” moored off coast Kure Atoll island Mariana Islands .
