Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,558 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Sammamish first appeared on maps around 1851 as "Sammamish". It took its present name in 1894 when it became part of the newly created King County. The Town of Sammamish was organized on October 2, 1851 from parts of neighboring towns Hermiston and Olympia. The first town meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Anna Bowers with about 20 people present including some farmers and their families who had come to help file for incorporation. One problem which needed to be solved before incorporation would be how to provide for school children since there were no schools in those areas at that time. Mrs. Anna Bowers offered to found a school for the children in her house and she also donated land for a schoolroom and teacher's quarters which were built between 1860-1861 by local subscription or donation from individuals or organizations such as the Masonic Lodge #1 (F&A#6) and School District No 1 (SD#2). On April 14, 1852, an act was passed by the Territorial Legislature providing for a township to be formed within King County with boundaries set out as follows: eastwardlyAlong Seminary Road northeasterly along Canby Road southwesterly along Everett Avenue until reaching Pacific Highway; thence easterly upon Pacific Highway to its intersection with Payette River just north of Thomas Lake The first post office opened in Sammamish on November 15, 1854 under the name "Hermiston". The first settler in what is now Sammamish included Mr./Mrs./One Hundred Boys/One Hundred Girls named David Capps (died 1863), wife Esther Capps (died 1865), three daughters Mary Ann Gorgas (born 1830), Hannah Greenough (born 1840) married John Greenough Jr., one son David Gorgas born 1850 married Emma Smith near Simi Valley A sawmill started up soon after opening operations around this time but it didn't really take off until later due to competition from more established mills in nearby communities like Bothell and Bellevue In 1862 two brothers named William Hargrave and George Hargrave founded what is now Western Paper Merchants which became quite successful because they could ship paper products all over Puget Sound In 1870 SAMMAMISH TOWN RECORD BOOK says WILHELM HARGREVE & GEORGE HAGRAVE bought THE MILL FROM DAVID COATES FOR $2,000
