This new armory was used for storage and assembly of artillery pieces and other munitions. It is interesting to note that many of the weapons purchased at this armory were not exported until after World War II when SAMMAMISH became part of the United States. In 1949, an amendment to the Washington State Constitution was passed which granted gun owners state-specific rights with regards to their firearms. This amendment allowed people in Washington State to possess guns for personal use without having to obtain a License from the Department of Justice or go through any other process. Today, there are stillgun stores located in Sammamish but they are much more specialized than when Stephenson’s Gun Store operated within town limits. In 1865, when Congress passed the Homestead Act, some settlers purchased land near today's center of town from John Day Foss. In 1872, they built a sawmill and other businesses on current site of the post office and school house. In 1907, Waddell & Son founded a shipping company that became First Seattle Shipbuilding Company (FSSCO). A year later they built a shipyard on present day Pierce Street; this company continued until 1916 when it merged with another shipyard to become Seattle Shipbuilding Company (later Boeing). The mill closed in 1918 but was reactivated by Boeing in 1949 as their primary supplier of ships hulls for their fleet of Douglas DC-3s and 707s airliners
