In 1980, Sammamish again became part of King County when it was merged into the county's former territory. Today, there are over 100 businesses located in Sammamish and its surrounds including many small factories which have been replaced by larger ones over time due to advances in technology and globalization. The community has also become increasingly popular among people who live near Seattle because of its easy access to education and cultural attractions such as museums and galleries not found anywhere else within commuting distance or close by airport services like SeaTac Airport or Tacoma International Airport (about an hour away).
The first people to live in the area now known as Sammamish were the Puyallup tribe. The first European settlers in what is now Sammamish were Major John McLoughlin and his family, who arrived in 1792. They built the first log cabin on Eben Emmons Bay.
