This area of town housed various workshops including an armory, rifle range, ammunition storage depot, tannery and printing press. Between 1905 and 1907, a hydroelectric plant was developed on the west side of town near where present day Mountlake Terrace is located. This project led to increased demand for water resources which caused several businesses to close such as a bakery (owned by Mrs. Putnam), sawmill (owned by Mr. Morse) and brewery (owned by Rufus Howe). In 1927, Sammamish became part of King County Executive District 2 after Washington State gained statehood that year. The district included all of King County except Pierce County which remained under Seattle City government control until 1959 when they merged intoKing County Government
Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,007 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name Sammamish means "sandy place" in the local language and is thought to be derived from Squaw Lake. Sammamish first appeared on maps in 1851 as part of the Whitman grant to Ulysses S. Grant and other western settlers. In 1853, Samuel Morse built a cabin here and named it after his home state of Massachusetts where he had been born in 1795. By 1886, when Sammamish incorporated as a town, it had a population of just over 100 people. The post office was established at Sammamish on April 24, 1889 (no date given). At that time there were only two houses in town—one belonging to Isaac Aitken and the other to John Denny—and no public buildings or land used for commerce or education. In 1911–12, when the Klondike goldfields became available for exploration, many new residents began arriving here from nearby towns such as Poulsbo and Issaquah because they wanted to take advantage of this new gold rush opportunity. As mining activities increased throughout World War I – which led to an increase in traffic through Sammamish – more businesses opened up including several stores and three hotels/motels: The Willows Motel (later torn down), The Landmark Hotel (now known as Wingate Inn) and The Gilded Cage hotel/motel (now known as Best Western). The war also helped spur development around the town with multiple schools being built: one preparatory school (later renamed Northwest High School), one high school (later renamed Seattle Pacific University), plus two vocational schools: One for carpentry or welding; another for plumbing or electrical work. By 1940 there were six churches serving a population of 3,500; by 1950 that number had grown to 12 with over 12 acres annexed into the town limits bygrowth; by 1960 there were 20 places of worship serving a population of 10,000+. During this time period too many homes were built without concern for environmental impact or consideration for housing needs; neighborhoods started developing but little attention was given to community building initiatives like zoning changes that would have placed more Restrictive Covenants on Housing developments so that communities could share scarce resources better among themselves instead of going unmentioned or unimpeded by planners who saw only surface-level growth potential while overlooking deeper problems caused by uncontrolled sprawl!
