Sammamish is an unincorporated community in King County, Washington, United States. It lies on the Kitsap Peninsula and surrounds the town of Gig Harbor. The population was 531 at the 2010 census. In 1854, John Sayles purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Sammamish and erected a distinct wooden house known as Sayles' Fort which still stands today within the limits of modern-day Sammamish. This early settler counted among his descendants Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison (1895-1981), author and naval historian; Commander David McCullough McCullough (1908-2006), Pulitzer Prize-winning author; Admiral Chester Nimitz (1911-2005), Chief of Naval Operations during World War II; and Rear Admiral James Stockdale (1917-2008), Commanding Officer, USS Enterprise (CVN 64). In 1920, Edward Cushman established a flour mill in nearby Gig Harbor which remains operational to this day as Cushman's Mill & Flour Company. In 1951, Microsoft Corporation founded its Redmond headquarters here adjacent to Cushman's Mill & Flour Company until its move to McLean outside Washington later that year.During World War II Japanese forces bombed Seattle with incendiary bombs on December 7th 1941 killed over 100 people including women and children living within miles of downtown Seattle making it one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in American history up until then! A memorial service for those killed was held at Grace Cathedral on December 11th 1942 with Reverend Driscoll officiating . Afterward approximately 2 million pieces or candy bars made from 150 tons(of candy) were collected by members of the community throughout Washington State

In 1815, Axtell married Rachel Snelling, who helped to start what would become a long-standing local business relationship between Sammamish residents andSnelling's husband, Jacob Riis. In 1818, when President James K. Polk signed an executive order creating the U.S.–Canada Boundary Commission, which aimed to create an eastern border between Canada and America based on surveys taken during the Mexican-American War, Axtell donated land to the commission at his cabin. This donation set off a pattern of donations that would continue through most of Washington's post-war growth. As American settlers poured into Washington in the late 19th century, they began to settle in new areas such as Sammamish and Olympia; these settlements were often smaller than those established within Seattle or Tacoma because they were not intended as permanent homes. By 1916, there were more than 1,500 people living in Sammamish alone; this number rapidly increased during World War II when many families moved into wartime housing east of Tacoma (i.e., south of Interstate 5). Although difficult to sustain over time due to changes in technology and consumer culture (particularly among young adults), some aspects of today'sSammamish community have held onto their traditional values and customs for centuries: For example, many residents still farm their own land; weddings are typically attended by close friends from throughout the community instead of expensive formal events;and art is still popular among locals despite being controversial among much larger metropolitan areas across America (see "Resistance against mass culture" below). 2

In 1847, Olympia and King County were organized, and Sammamish became part of King County. The original town site was on the east side of Puget Sound. In 1884, a post office was established at Sammamish, and growth continued until World War II when most residents left for good. After the war, businesses closed and many families moved out of town; however, a few stayed to create a new community called Westlake which grew up around parcels of land next to Sammamish River.
