Sammamish is a census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of theSeattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The name "Sammamish" first appeared on maps in 1853 as "Samsun". The name likely derived from the local Sammamish Tribe of Native Americans which inhabited and hunted in the area around modern-day Sammamish and Silverdale. In 1871, when Puget Sound Railway was built through central Washington, locomotive crews stopped at a small station called Sammamish for food and water; this led to the name being applied to the entire original village site. In 1907, a post office was established at present day Sammamish Village Hall; however, because it was an agricultural community with few residents other than mail carriers and their families, no mail reached residents until 1912 when express service began between Seattle and Tacoma. At that time, everyone living within three miles of the railroad (or five if travelling by boat) received mail. On February 6, 1911 issues of The Seattle Times featured an article about changes taking place within Pacific Northwest communities due to World War I: "The townspeople have had plenty of warning that they were coming under military occupation but they paid little attention until after mobilization started...the menfolk gathered together one evening last week near Point Defiance Park to take stock...the mood among them seemed almost despondent." The article went on to state that many people abandoned their homes during mobilization because there was no food or shelter available: "Some 500 people had been living in tents set up along Crown Bayou since April 1st...Most of these people are now safe back behind their homes." Assembling supplies for defense became difficult once war ended; many villagers turned to crime in order make ends meet. Many properties were auctioned off subsequent to Japan's seizure of Western possessions during World War II including what is now Sammamish Village Hall complex. Sammamash has experienced some growth over recent decades including new housing developments such as Kinglake Place(2006), Southridge(2007), Northridge(2008), Sunrise Lakeshore(2009) and most recently Stadium Place (2010). Some significant events associated with Sammamish include: In 1907 King County voters passed an ordinance calling for a school district that would serve all citizens regardless of income level. This led to construction of Pioneer High School which opened its doors on October 1st, 1907. Today Pioneer remains one of only two high schools in King County that offers seven grade levels: K-12th grade; 8th through 12th grade; PreKindergarten through 3rd grade; 4th through 6th grades; 7th through 10th grades; 11th through 12th years old; and 13th through 16ths grades (11TH - 16TH GRADES ONLY). Other than Pioneer High School, all other public schools were constructed subsequent to this initial grant program organized by Mrs. Anna Quesenberry Fenton (1907-1984). Mrs. Fenton spearheaded fundraising efforts which allowed for construction not only of our current elementary schools but also building extensions for Asotin Junior/Senior High School (now Asotin Senior/High School), Redmond Technical College District One Building #2 kitsch store building (#1), Southsound Elementary Building #2 & new gymnasium addition (#3), Redondo Beach Elementary Building #4 & new library addition (#5), White Rock Elementary building #6 & new physical education classroom addition (#7) -all while maintaining much smaller budgets than those allocated for our now larger high school counterparts! With such ambitious beginnings it might be easy to forget just how resourceful Msgr.'s wife actually was! It should be noted that her husband never set out to build anything particular beyond what he could see existing within his own boundaries...and very often what he saw fit to build! Consequently we can enjoy today's beautiful architecture without having to worry about whether or not money would have gone towards preserving any historic items had he chosen otherwise!
