It straddles Interstate 5 and is about 20 miles from Everett and 30 miles from Seattle. According to the 2010 census, Sammamish has a total area of , of which (or 97%) is land and (or 3%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,912 people living in this town. Of these, 762 (26% of all residents) were male and 627 (22% of all residents) were female; age distribution was 389 (14% under 18 years old, 593 (29% 18-64 years old), 258 (8% 65 years or older), 98% white). This makes Sammamish one of Puget Sound's youngest towns at just over 100 years old!

Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Sammamish has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for more than 2,000 years and was named after their village of Sammamish in what is now eastern King County. The first European settlers arrived in 1853 and named the community "Sammamish" after their own village on the banks of Lake Washington. In 1869, King County established a telegraph line from Seattle to Tacoma and then to Olympia; this allowed residents of Sammamish and nearby communities access to important government information that was not available to those in larger cities. began developing as an agricultural center with orchards, cornfields, dairy farms and wheat fields until World War II when steel production took over much of the economy. After widespread devastation caused by both World Wars I and II, the town became a largely residential community with few industry or commercial establishments until the late 1990s when grunge rock music led to a revival in interest in local arts and culture. The town's origins can be traced back to 1792 when James McKay founded McKay's Ferry Landing (later renamed Moenkaua) on Puget Sound near present-day Sammamish High School; McKay was one of several early pioneers who explored Puget Sound looking for land suitable for colonization. In 1853, British explorer Alexander Graham Bell made his famous voyage along today's Olympic Peninsulaordering his ships upriver towards Whatcom Inlet where he discovered North America forthe first time; Samuel Hearst Jr., founder of The Hearst Corporation had earlier sailed up these same waters searching for new landmass.(Hearst also foundedSeattle). By 1870 most all original growth within what is now King County had occurred within contemporary moored villages such as Moenkaua (now McKee Heights), Kitsap Pointe (later Capitol Hill), Auburn Hills (later Seagull Point), Everett (later Enumclaw), Snohomish Bay ( later Gig Harbor).. When American Civil War broke out it quickly became apparent that there would be ample transportation routes connecting Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton to battle lines onshore;; consequently many northern farmers turned south rather than fight on behalf of their compatriots.(See map below). During this time there were also sporadic clashes between Native Americans living northward along Elliott Bay shoreline vs those living downriver along Lake Washington shoreline known as "the wars." Many natives were killed during these conflicts including Chief Joseph(14 July 1855 – 8 November 1865)and others were taken captive including Ouray Jefe(15 December 1850 - 21 May 1860)).
