In 1909, a group of farmers in the Sammamish area began to experiment with bipods, which were then an unusual and complex tool. A post office was established at present-day Sammamish on January 1, 1840. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.96%, is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,746 people, 514 households, and 439 families residing in the town. The population density was 1010 people per square mile (390/km²). There were 636 housing units at an average density of 479 per square mile (227/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; 2% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%.

In 1907, Samuel Merrill opened a grocery store on Main Street which soon became known as "Merrill's". The store closed in 1925 but reopened as "Sammamish Merchants" several times over the years until it closed for good in 1984. In 1964–1965, downtownSammamish was renovated with new sidewalks and streetlights; this also marked the beginning of commercial development around Main Street which continues to this day. One of America's first municipally owned electric light poles ("the Moda Pole") was installed at Fourth Avenue South and Union Way West corner during that year; currently that pole can be seen from Interstate 5 just north of downtown Sammamishi
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish in 1692. The Puget Sound region was explored by Captain George Vancouver in 1793 and he named it Victoria Land after King George III of England. The first permanent settler in what is now Sammamish was John Jacob Astor in 1847. He founded a fur trading post on the eastern shore of Elliott Bay, which served as the main port for his business. In 1909, Sammamish became a city when it was incorporated as part of Seattle.
