Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name "Sammamish" comes from the Ojibwe word "sammi," meaning "place where tobacco is grown." In 1847, Captain George Vancouver discovered Puget Sound and named it after his friend and mentor Sammamish Chief John Bennett. The first settler in what is now Sammamish was Mr. Green in 1851. He built a log cabin on land that now includes parts of the city of Everett and some acres near Boeing Field. By 1870, about 50 people lived in Sammamish; 20 were farmers and 30 were traders or fishermen. In 1871-72, John Hammond developed a millrace through which the Willapa River flowed to supply water for mills at Edmonds on the mainland (later renamed Seattle). In 1907-08, when Seattle's population exceeded that of King County by over 100%, Mayor Harry Lewis authorized annexation of much of King County as part of an effort to increase services for residents there while still preserving its autonomy as an independent county. This included land east of Lake Union including what is now Sammamish Junction and most of today's north end of Elliott Bay adjacent to downtown Seattle proper; this land was eventually annexed into King County as well. WhenSeattle's population reached 5 million in 1962, Mayor Arthur Crouch decided to annex all but 1/4thofKingCounty intoSeattle so that more people could live within walking distanceof everything City had to offer without having to go outside . This left only Sammamish with its own elected government - something not seen again until 2000 when Jeff Johnson became mayor after being elected as a Democrat against then Republican incumbent Paul Allen

In 1872, the city of Seattle moved to its current location and Sammamish became a part of the new city. The population of Sammamish peaked at around 20,000 in 1907 but decreased over time due to various factors including World War II and suburbanization. However, it has since begun to grow again as a bedroom community for Seattle.
