Sammamish is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first guns in Sammamish were made by hunters and traders during the late 18th century. In 1792, John Thomson invented a shotgun that could be fired from a bow and arrow. The gun was used by Indians to hunt deer and other game in the area. By 1821, firearms had been introduced into the community by Capt. John Chatham and others who settled there after being expelled from British Columbia for practicing law without getting a license from Queen Victoria. In 1847, Samuel Colt produced his first revolver in Sammamish – an automatic pistol designed to fire multiple rounds quickly to protect people on horseback or when hunting with dogs. This weapon became popular among farmers and ranchers throughout the state of Washington because it could be reloaded quickly and allowed them to shoot more targets at one time than with traditional rifles or pistols. Sammamish is a small town in Washington state, United States. It was founded on the Kitsap Peninsula by Japanese Americans in the early 1900s. The town is located about 20 miles northwest of Seattle and 15 miles east of Olympia. As of the 2010 census, its population was 596 people. The name Sammamish comes from "sammi," meaning "shore" or "landing" and "mishu," meaning "place." The first European to visit Kitsap Peninsula was Juan de Fuca in 1792. The first permanent European settler in Sammamish occurred in 1834 when Henry Cooke established a farm near present-day Sammamish High School. In 1836, Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and discovered the Strait of Juan de Fuca. He named it after his captaincy's ship, HMS Discovery (Vancouver 1697). This land used to be part of King County until becoming part of Washington in 1889 when it became part of what is now Pierce County. During World War II Japanese American 1007 residents were required to leave their homes for relocation inland because they were considered enemy aliens under wartime hysteria known as internment camps operated by the US government at various places across America including Seattle Naval Shipyard, Manzanar concentration camp, and Topaz Relocation Center outside Reno Nevada during World War II
The Sammamish area was first settled by the Lillooet people in the late 18th century. The first permanent white population arrived in 1824 when Captain David Denny and his party of five men landed onthe Kitsap Peninsula. They established a trading post at present-day Tacoma and named their settlement after one of their shipmates, SamuelSmithers. The first school in the area was built at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on Elliott Bay in1834. Tacoma finally became a city in 1911 following the merger of several nearby small towns.
