Sammamish is a small community located in east King County, Washington. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,569. Sammamish, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The name Sammamish means "place where the willows grow." The first settlers in this area were Indians who had been living there for many years before white men arrived in what is now King County. In 1836, George Stephenson built a sawmill on the site of present-day Sammamish to supply lumber for his new bridge across Puget Sound. The mill helped to develop and create jobs in the nearby community of Moses Lake and stimulated growth throughout King County. The mills closed around 1870, but their impact on local agriculture continued until World War II when heavy use by military forces caused significant damage to local forests and farms. After repeal of prohibition in 1933, a growing number of people began using alcohol as a key ingredient in their diets and social life replaced traditional agricultural activities as mainstays of village life. In 1951, Sammamish incorporated as an independent municipality under state law following passage of the Washington State Constitution which granted self-government to all municipalities withinKing County not subject to federal jurisdiction (the so-called "Super Town" laws). With its own police department and fire department, Sammamish quickly became one of the most active communities in King County after statehood. Today's economy depends largely upon services provided by government agencies such as those mentioned above: schools and health care; retail trade; professional services; transportation; tourism; and agriculture including livestock raising
The Sammamish area was first settled by the Monks of Seattle in 1851. The community grew rapidly, and in 1874 it became a city. In 1907, the city annexed the adjacent town of Ballard.
