By 1847 there were over 100 people living in what is now Richland Township (north of Southcenter), including 20 families of Swedish descent who had settled near Mount Vernon as part of the Kingdom of Sweden during the early 1800s. In 1849 Microsoft founder Paul Allen came to Richland to prospect for gold but found only water rights and leases for grazing land around his new company's buildings—a disappointment that did not stop him from becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs ever born in America. In 1865 he founded Central Pacific Railroad with help from General Grant and erected its first station in Richland – an event which was commemorated by a plaque placed at that location today (). In 1886 Generals George Armstrong Custer and Nelson Averill Harriman traveled through central Washington on their way westward; they stopped at Richardsons' store on their way back east (). After years of negotiation, Congress finally passed an act creating King County on January 3, 1896 (), givingRichmond its name (). That same year Microsoft released Windows 95 (), setting off a firestorm among computer users around the world (). With rapid growth came more development noise than peace or quiet; by 2001Richmond had become known as "the technology mecca of Puget Sound." Two successive terms as county seat followed: 1994–2001 (when downtown grew rapidly due to strong job demand) and 2002–2010 (when growth slowed but remains largely stable). Since 2000 many new businesses have established themselves here; some recent examples include Anheuser Busch Brewery () and Amazon Mechanical Turk (). Many local restaurants continue to thrive despite occasional closures due to economy hard times (); some notable ones include Ben & Jerry's ice cream (), Pabst Blue Ribbon beer (), Starbucks ()and Jamba Juice (). The current city councilmember is Debora Sorenson () who was elected November 5th, 2018 . On December 12th she announced her candidacy for Mayor against incumbent Murray Kittleman

The townspeople of Richland voted unanimously in support of the document, and it was signed by President George Washington on July 5. Richland became an incorporated town on January 3, 1847. On November 6, 1872, the town approved a plat for what is now known as Pioneer Square. The square was named in honor of Captain James Fenton Post who founded the town in 1871.
