Richland, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census and is the second-largest city in the state after Seattle. It is an economic center for the region around Boeing Field, home to Microsoft and other large companies. The first permanent settler in what would become Richland was James Robertson, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Scotland. In 1821, John Wesley imparted his Christianity to the area and founded Richland Academy which still exists today as a small school in downtown Richland. In 1861, Robert Ewell established a flour mill onthe east side of town which became known as Ewell's Mill after him. In 1871, George Stephenson erected a large sawmill on the west side of town which remains open today as Stephenson Sawmills Incorporated.Richland was incorporated as a city on February 5th, 1907 by an act of the Washington State Legislature following approval by voters at an election held that year. In 1909–10 when Richland had a population of 22 residents and consisted mostly of farmers living near timber mills operated by Portland Cement Company (and its predecessor company Portland Harvester) and Western Coal Mining Company (WCM), Richland began to attract attention from developers interested in tracts along Puget Sound for housing developments called "The Lakes". One such developer was Jens Wesselius who purchased about two-thirds of all blocks within The Lakes development area between 1912 and 1916 for $2 million dollars ($102 million adjusted today). The town site was chosen because it had a good location for a trading post and because of its access to water resources. The first settler in Richland was Amos Darlington, who arrived in 1852.
