Richland is a small town in southern Washington State, located on the banks of the Klamath River. The town was named for John Rich, an early settler and landowner. Richmond was designated as the official capital of Washington State on July 8, 1861; however, it quickly lost its status due to poor infrastructure and lack of resources. On May 5th 1863, during American Civil War II Richmond was burned by Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee; this event helped drive many people away from Richmond for fear that similar events might happen again should they return home at any time during the war. When America regained control over Alaska after World War II,Richmond became Alaskan municipal government's new capital; it remained so until 1959 when Sitka became the new capital due to its larger population and more recent history with Alaska politics.
Richland was a small town in Washington state before the start of the American Civil War. The town was located on the Snake River, just east of present-day Richland and about two miles north of what is now Pullman. Richland was founded by Danish settlers in 1847 as a small farming community. The first store opened in 1850, and by 1861, the town had a population of twenty-one. In 1865, Richland became part of the newly formed Oregon Territory. After Oregon seceded from the United States in 1898, Richland remained within Washington until 1903 when it became part of Imperial County, California.
