Richland, Washington is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. The first Europeans to reach what is now Richland were Spanish explorers in 1592 and 1596 who named it "Isla de los Pintados" (Island of the Painted People). In 1851, a group of capitalists from Seattle founded the town on land they had acquired from the Skagit River people. They named it for one of their own: John D. Rockefeller Sr.'s brother Nicholas Rockefeller's father Edwin Harriman's nephew Andrew Carnegie's son-in-law James J. Hill's grandson Nelson A. Stephenson's uncle George Wickersham's brother-in-law Cornelius Vanderbilt's son Henry DeWitt Clinton'. The town site was chosen because it lay between two branches of the Walla Walla River where those rivers converge near its mouth on Puget Sound. The name stuck and today Richland has been spelled various ways including RICHMOND, RIchardt, REDLAND and Redding before settling on RIchardt in 1853; RIchardt became an official name in 1865 when Richland & Thurston County were merged into Clark County The townsite consisted of several small parcels of land which were organized into township blocks until 1907 when Richland Township was created with a population of 1,500 residents and included all present day Richland as well as parts of Thurston and King Sound townships lying eastward along the Columbia River which at that time formed part of Vancouver Island In 1912Richmond voters approved annexation by Tacoma making it the second municipality within Tacoma proper after Occidental Heights AsRichmond grew larger more streets were paved and new businesses opened up including a cigar store opened by Julius Streicher in 1916 just east side Of SR 99/I‑5 exit 169A known today asStreicher Plaza In 1922Richmond annexed adjacent Unalaska Borough creating then largest ever municipality size for Washington state with over 100,000 residents By 1930richmond had reached its peak population having surpassed 2,000 residents per square mile with many large businesses such as tanks & munitions plants established along I‑5 corridor across from city limits

Richland is a small town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 985 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Canyon City, OR Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Richland was Levi Coffin on February 14, 1823. He and his family were the first white people to live in what would become Richland. In 1850, John Dyer established a sawmill and gristmill here. In 1865, he donated land for a school district which later became Columbia School District #2. In 1899, the Oregon National Guard Armory building was built here as part of Camp Downing barracks complex for soldiers stationed in Multnomah County during World War I. On November 5th 1916 Richland residents raised their voices against prohibitionism when they joined with other towns throughout Oregon to demand repeal of Prohibition in Congress from then- congressman Eugene McCarthy's office in Oregon City . After unsuccessful attempts by local politicians to pass an end to prohibition through legislation or by referendum, various community groups began making plans to establish a dry campus at Multnomah University where students could learn about and practice responsible drinking
