When annexation proceedings were started for Klickitat Valley by King County in 1937–38, Richland opposed annexation because it would have put the town near Puget Sound National Marine Sanctuary and other sensitive areas; however, it ultimately accepted annexation. During World War II (1939-1945), RichLAND played an important role as one of three main bomber bases within King County; other two were Midway Island Naval Air Station and Cheney Army Air Field northeast of Olympia. Japanese forces destroyed much of downtown Portland on March 14th 1945 while Allied bombers were bombing Tokyo; this bombing raid has been cited as one of history's worst air raids against civilians ever carried out by any nation
