During World War II, Richland played a significant role as an aluminum production center due to its location within easy reach of Tacoma and other major cities during wartime production needs. After Pearl Harbor,Richmond became one of several areas across Washington targeted for bombing raids because of Japanese military activity in that area; however no damage or human casualties occurred as a result. In recent years,Richmond has seen increasing development along its waterfront including brick buildings being erected near I-5 southbound lanes providing views out over Lake Union into Seattle. In 1906, when Richland became a city, its first mayor, Harry J. Hilliard, named it in honor of his father-in-law General Nelson A. Miles who had died two years earlier at Fort Snelling near Minneapolis after leading American military forces during the Mexican–American War and later becoming general inspectorgeneral for war efforts in Washington Territory. In 1921, Richland became home to one of the world's first airships when America's RMS Titanic collided with an iceberg off Alaska's coast while sailing from Seattle to Newfoundland; both ships sank almost immediately due to their own weight and poor design which made them unsinkable despite being equipped with lifeboats that did not work properly (the sinking has since been blamed on mechanical problems). The citys rich history comes from its many industries including transportation (railroads), banking (both national and local), real estate (townhouses and apartments), shipbuilding (including America's largest freighter ever built by Columbia Shipbuilders Inc.), agriculture (poultry) and pharmaceuticals until recently; these days much attention is given to Carter Lake State Park located within walking distance of downtown where there are numerous golf courses nearby as well as fishing opportunities available both upstream from town limits at Carter Lake Dam or downstream along the Snake River National Wildlife Refuge just east of town limits

Coalmining began around 1900 but stopped due to competition from oil production; however, coal still remains an important factor in local economic life today. A fire destroyed much of downtown Richland on November 8th 1901 during winter weather conditions; the fire caused $1 million dollars worth of damage which has never been fully recovered from although some estimates suggest that as much as $6 million dollars has been lost since then including infrastructure replacement costs alone! The community rebuilt quickly with help from donations and volunteers including some who had gathered around the old courthouse square where work on rebuilding started two weeks later! Richland was founded in 1792 by John Rich and his family. It became a county in 1853, and was named for Richland River. The town of Richland was incorporated in 1885.
