Renton, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of Kitsap County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 149,651. The first Europeans to visit what is now Renton were Native Americans who called it "Nisqually" meaning "place where salmon swim." The city was incorporated on December 11, 1892 as part of Seattle. On January 1, 1907, annexation by Bellevue made Renton a separate municipality with a population of 31 residents. On October 15 of that year approved annexation by Everett which added an additional 21 residents over time until its total reached 129 residents on January 1st 1959. The original boundaries for both cities were 10th Avenue North (now Renton Way) east from Fremont Street south to Interstate 5; 12th Avenue North from I-5 north to NE Third Street; NE Seventh Street from I-5 north to SE Fourth Street; and SE Fifth Avenue from SE Fourth Street east across First Avenue into downtown Bellevue (now part of Tacoma). On February 13th 1961 King County voters passed a resolution recognizing that there are areas within Bellevue Municipality including Harborview Medical Center which are not included in either Seattle or Renton Municipal boundaries when considering annexations/mergers so long as those areas meet certain criteria including: having hospital beds available for patients discharged within seven days after discharge or being understaffed; having no other hospitals within two miles; being served by an ambulance service company that provides EMS services 24 hours per day/7 days per week; meeting fire codes requirements such as having one hose truck available during each shift for fire fighting activities up to six hours per day/week - this exception does not apply if served by another municipality without an ambulance service company that meets these same fire codes These conditions were met in Harborview Medical Center annexation once again making it eligible for inclusion in both municipalities
The city of Renton was founded in 1881 by Colonel John F. Renton and his family. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s, thanks to its location on the railroads and its ample recreational opportunities. In 1907, the city annexed the neighboring town of Auburn. This annexation created a new municipality, which continues to exist today as Renton-Auburn Township. The population of Renton reached 100,000 by 1910, and it grew even more during World War II as the Pentagon moved to nearby Blaine. After the war, small businesses declined in popularity and economic activity stagnated until the arrival of Microsoft in 1984. Today, Renton is home to over 120 businesses and employs over 200 people.
