It was founded in 1881 by lumber baron George Mercer and his wife Jennie, and has since become one of the most diverse cities in the country. In 1821, local fur trader James Clallam discovered an area that would soon become Renton while exploring the Strait of Juan de Fuca. He named the spot "Clallam Island" after himself and his family. After purchasing Clallam Island, Mercer began construction on what would later become his mansion known as 'The Manor'. The mansion would serve as the home of Mercer until his death in 1951. During its time as Mercer's home, The Manor also hosted various events such as a state fair and cricket matches between Seattle and Tacoma during the late 1800s. In 1937, after several decades of being vacant, The Manor was sold to developer Milton Siegel for $10 million dollars. After several years of renovations, Siegel turned The Manor into one of Renton's most popular tourist attractions; hosting events such as car shows and concerts throughout the year. Renton, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of King County. It is located on Puget Sound, about twenty miles (32 km) east of Seattle and about two hours by car from Olympia. The population was 497 at the 2010 census, up from 472 in 2000. The area that now makes up Renton was first inhabited by the Chippewa tribe in what is now King County. In 1851, a group of settlers led by George Mercer arrived here and founded the town of Renton on land that had been donated to them by Commodore John Denny during his tenure as captain of the USS Discovery during its exploring voyage around North America in 1847-48. The town grew quickly due to its location close to navigable water and easy access to transportation routes. By 1870, it had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,500 people. In 1916, when King County was created, Renton became one of its twelve original townships; it remained so until 1975 when it was annexed into Seattle as part of a larger suburban development called "Central District". In 1992–1993, following a referendum vote approved by voters in central district districts across Seattle & King County,[8][9] Renton's township governance reverted back to its pre-1975 form with elected officials consisting only of seven school trustees who were responsible for providing services within their respective wards (northwest Tacoma included), as well as service functions such as trash collection & street maintenance for all residents within their boundaries; these latter functions are now carried out bySeattle City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw[10] . Former Mayor Norm Stamper cited annexation rates throughout downtown Seattle combined with declining murder rates[11] – which were prior high points for homicide rate in Mariners Harbor – as contributing factors behind his decision not seek re-election in 2006 despite having won reelection twice before – seeking insteadintship on City Council representing Precinct 3A which includes much of Pioneer Square/University Village/Bothell Parklands/Dearborn Heights etc., adjacent portions being annexed into Central District between 1996-2001 inclusive[12][13]. However he has since endorsed mayoral candidate Jenny Durkan who defeated him both times.[14]
