In 1886 Wm Halsey built the first radio station in America – KHQV – broadcasting from an old barn on SW Mercer Drive across from today's Amazon Web Services building . The popularity of radios led to new construction aroundnw 50th Sts SW andNE cornering lake Union Blvd where 3 brick buildings were erected between 1895-1900 by 8 prominent local builders (the original Everett Block) . This populated growth pattern continued until WWI when all development stopped due to prohibition laws prohibiting alcohol sales within city limits
