Renton is a city in King County, Washington, United States. Renton was founded on January 1, 1907 by the merger of two small towns—Everett and North Bend. The population of the city was 12,502 at the 2010 census. The name "Renton" is an Aboriginal word meaning "place where the willows grow." The first settlers to Renton were farmers who arrived in 1853 from Holland. They built cabins on the south bank of Puget Sound and started raising chickens and pigs. In 1901, they formed the Everett Agricultural Society to promote agriculture in what was then rural King County. In 1905, they merged with North Bend to form one town. During World War I, Renton served as a training camp for American troops during the European Theater of Operations (ETO). After V-E Day in 1945, many military veterans returned home and began their own businesses. This growth led to demand for housing; however, no zoning laws were passed until 1931 when incorporation became possible by ordinance under WAC 4-11-070 which stated that all property within 2 blocks of a public school be zoned for industrial or commercial use only if it had not been used for agricultural purposes within 30 years before annexation without special approvals from both cities concerned; as such there were few homes built until after World War II when developers took advantage of this policyarlogy while still allowing agriculture on properties that had once been zoned industrial/commercial only through 1943 when WAC 5-1-060 prohibited new subdivisions east of Interstate 90 without specialapprovals from both cities concerned thus creating much older residential areas currently known as desirable neighborhoods like Westlake Village which straddles Interstate90 between Northwest Spokane Street and Interstate 91 eastward
