In recent years, Renton has seen significant growth due to new development along Interstate 5 and nearby Magnuson Boulevard including: Microsoft headquarters adjacent to Interstate 5; two major retail complexes anchored by Safeway and JCPenney; numerous housing developments (including some large mixed-use towers), as well as a number of smaller projects; plus several million dollars worth of investment in infrastructure such as transportation improvements around I-5 along with expansions at both Microsoft Surface Devices Campus (opened December 2016) and Amazon Web Services leased land on Capitol Hill across from Safeway which will house Amazon’s second fulfillment center (the first being located at Kirkland & Duvall). These investments have led to an overall increase in economic activity that has supported more than 20 full-time jobs within Renton itself since 2007 when retail space outgrew job locations available within city limits by about 10%.
