A post office was established at Point Defiance in 1809; it changed its name to Renton on January 1st, 1831 when Territorial Highway No 8 extended through the town center from McEwan Road to southbound Empire Street between First Avenue and Union Boulevard/Winthrop Street eastward along Eastlake Avenue until it reached US-119 northbound near Mercer Island Ferry Terminal on May 3rd 1919 when WSU closed its campus adjacent to I-5 southbound just beyond milepost 124 (the current boundary between Everett and Renton). In 1907 King Ranch became part of what would become Kitsap County; a year later all land within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown became part of the city limits including most of today's eastside corridor bisected by Interstate 5/Eastlake Avenue with only a small piece remaining within original town limits extending southwestward to today's intersection with NE 45th St./NE 50th Ave., now located inside Pioneer Square Park where Founders Day is celebrated each year. In 1912 "The Seattle Times" reported that new residential developments were being built rapidly along Boeing Field Blvd./Pioneer Square Rd., east off First Avenue NE but no mention was made about any connection with what would become today's downtown core - instead it appeared that development rights for these areas had passed directly from those who had originally leased them back decades earlier! Today you can still find evidence of this typeOf leasing practice as well as many old industrial buildings constructed during Rapid Fire Developments days long ago when people literally built overnight what are now streetscapes! In 1924 City Councilwoman Sadie Lowenthal secured passage by ordinance allowing animal feed stores within city limits as well as providing seed storage for farmers markets starting February 6th 1925 expanding markets even further into portions southeast & southwest suburban areas not served previously by storeyspace pet food sales only! By 1931 there were 12 feed stores & 4 seed stores serviced by over 100 employees !! This rapid growth continued unabated until 1945 when World War II interrupted commercial poultry production throughout the Pacific Northwest leading to decline beginning 1946 thru 1949!!! Although egg prices increased significantly during wartime shortages limited production resulting in eggs fetching $0-$2 per dozen during 1948-1949 recession!!!!!! Today we enjoy large supermarkets such as Safeway & Kroger carrying quality products typically costing $1-$2 per pound vs pre-WWII price range averaging about $4 per pound
